A Farmhouse Renovation by The Design Hunters

Last year Megan photographed this gorgeous renovation for our friend Veronica Valencia of The Design Hunters. Veronica completely renovated this gorgeous farmhouse into the coziest (yet still masculine) home, and it’s bringing so much inspiration to us during our own renovation. I mean, those door handles alone are giving us all of the heart eyes.

You can see more and read a little FAQ with Veronica on Jillian Harris’ blog here. But for now, feel free to scroll through and take a look at some of our favorites from the transformation.

V also has a line out with Select Blinds and since we’re wanting some roman shades for our kitchen and breakfast nook window we’ve been eyeing these and already have a few favorites picked out! You’ll see these all around this home and they look so amazing!

I love how bright and airy the home feels yet it still has moody aspects that make it so warm and inviting. Can we talk about that bedroom? All kinds of moody happening in there and I love it! What was your favorite part of this farmhouse reno?

Our New Home!!

We bought a house!! We are beyond excited to set roots down in Visalia again and make an old house our new home.

If you know us then you know we didn’t want a new build. Actually, the older the better. We love the charm, unique features and layouts of older homes. So when a 1960’s ranch style home came on the market in a friendly little community tucked away in the outskirts of town, we knew we had to jump on it.

Yes, its 50 years old and yes, it needs a lot of updates (wait until you see these bathrooms) and some work but it’s nothing we can’t handle, right?

So, after thirty days of paperwork, inspections and negotiating we finally got our keys to our first home, that just so happened to be on Adam’s birthday (what a gift right).

Instead of moving in right away like a normal couple we’ve decided to dive head first into renovations. But before we share our DIY experiences we want to share the home in its current state and give you an idea of what we’re working with.

So, come on in!

The house was built in 1964 and most things in it were also built in 1964. Including those terrible doors and the old windows. Both (all) are getting updating very, very soon. Scroll down to the bottom of the post for a video tour and watch Megan take way too long to explain things that are being done in the house.

Santa Rosa / Scribe Winery

Sometimes (most of the time) when we have out of town weddings we turn the trip into a little getaway. It’s the way we usually travel, a little work and a little play. We loved exploring the Santa Rosa area and finally being able to check out Scribe Winery. This was all before they had finished the Hacienda and now we are dying to get back. Have you seen it? It looks incredible!

We stopped at some really great little cafes and restaurants during our stay. We loved The Naked Pig! I (megan) will literally never turn down an eggs benni and this adorable little spot did not disappoint.

Wisteria is my love language. That is all.     Adam, showing off his moved at our wedding at Annadel Estate Winery. Gosh, what a gorgeous venue that is! We can’t wait to go back! If you’d like to see the wedding we shot there you can click here to see all from Janna and Sean’s gorgeous day.

Flying Goat Coffee was really, really easy on the eyes. A darling coffee shop that we loved! We explored Healdsburg, and loved basically everything about that adorable town and then made our way out to The Fremont Diner (with the millions of other people) for burgers. It was so packed that we ended up just eating in our car in the parking lot!   We stopped at a few wineries on our little wine tour of the area but the one we were really excited about was Scribe. I mean, how adorable is this place? We ended up shipping way too many bottles of wine home after our tasting, too. Whoops! We can’t wait to go back soon and check out the Hacienda!

Bon Voyage LA

So, hey there. You may be wondering where we went for an entire year. Well, here’s the long story long.

After seven years of living the LA life, we decided it was time for something different. We were ready to leave the hustle and bustle and move somewhere where we could live a little bit slower pace of life.

Life has a way of telling you it’s time to make a change. We slowly started crossing off the adult life check list. First, fall in love. Second, move in together. Third, get some pets (hello Samson and Delilah). Fourth, get married, and finally step five….buy a house.

Now, we know buying a house isn’t cheap but damn…LA’s market is something else. I mean we’re not poor but we also can’t cough up $1 million for a 2 bed 1 bath.

We knew that something would have to change in order to move on to step 5 of the adult check list. Either we win the lottery or we think about moving. It started out as joke…”hey lets move back to Visalia and build a house..hahaha” (us laughing out loud at that beyond crazy thought). That joke then slowly blossomed into an idea…”maybe we could actually move back to our home town?” That idea lead us to browsing homes on Zillow which made us realized that we could totally buy a house there. That then lead us to making the final decision to move home.

It all happened so fast but made more and more sense as time went on. At some point, which we don’t even remember, we decided that Visalia was calling us back. Sure, it’s a small farming town that lacks entertainment, hip restaurants, and juice bars, but there’s something about settling down in a quiet spot that just fits our lifestyle.

While we do miss LA and all of the food, concerts and friends, we really don’t miss the traffic, the cost of living and having to walk three blocks from our shitty parking spot to our apartment. So now we’re on the house hunt, and while it’s pretty stressful it’s also very exciting to know we’re taking a huge leap onto the next major phase of life together.

Step 5. Buy a house and settle down…lets do this!

But before we moved we had our dear friend Lyndsey of Jack and Lola Photography come over and take photos of us in our  charming (old) and cozy (small) Long Beach apartment. We hung out with her in our semi-empty apartment and cute neighborhood most of the afternoon, and we will forever and always cherish these special photos.

Styling with Tobi

Have you heard of the online shop, Tobi? A client of mine, years ago, had the most beautiful dress for her boudoir session and she told me she got it from a site called Tobi. I’ve been a big fan of the brand ever since. I picked out a few of my favorite items from their site recently and wanted to show you how I styled them on a somewhat average day of mine. When I don’t have a session to go to you’ll find me at home for the majority of the day, sneaking away for a quick coffee date with girlfriends and hoping that once my husband gets home he steals me away from my computer for a little date. Dream day? Maybe.

Our mornings start out snuggling with our kitties and drinking coffee. We’re super early birds and usually wake up before the sun rises. It’s our favorite time together, before the emails are replied to, the lunches are made, and the hubby has to leave for work. We’re usually cozied up on the sofa, with at least one giant fluff ball in our lap. Speaking of, let me tell you a quick story about our cats. We wanted to clean out our floor furnace to turn on our heater and once Adam opened it all up and starting clearing out the dust bunnies he uncovered fourteen cat toys. Guys, fourteen!! Our little miss Delilah thinks it’s a fun game to shove her toys down there so now we’ve turned off our pilot light juuuust in case. With that all said, this sweater dress is the perfect thing to throw on in our chilly apartment.

After Adam leaves for work my day begins. I start writing back emails, editing and checking my to do list. Being a photographer, there are many days I don’t leave my house (the editing cave is real) but it’s so good to get out. Rose Park Roasters is the cutest little coffee shop in our hood of Long Beach and I’m there weekly either for client meetings, dates with friends or just grabbing a delicious chai latte and bacon cheddar biscuit to take back to the cave. This floral maxi is the perfect thing to throw on for a girly date at this cute spot! It’s also a little sassy if you wanted to wear it out to a date night with some cute platforms with your beau! I love how versatile it is.

Once 6:30 rolls around I’m anxiously waiting for Adam to get home. We try to go out on a date once a week, usually to one of our go to spots for sushi or pizza but every once in a while we’ll break out of our restaurant shell and try a new spot. We’re dying to head to Rances for pizza soon and check out Roe’s new restaurant. So many great spots here in Long Beach! This wrap dress is seriously my favorite. Not only is it super flattering, how can a wrap dress not be? But the color is perfect and can easily be dressed up or down. I love pairing it with my favorite vintage clutch and platforms. Gotta show off the gams on date nights!
