A little San Francisco Getaway

Last fall we had a weekend getaway to one of our favorite places. We arrived in the evening, stopped at our airbnb in the adorable Pacific Heights neighborhood and walked straight to Delfina for a little midnight snack because when you’re on vacation carbs don’t count.

We woke up extra early Saturday morning, grabbed an uber and headed straight to our favorite breakfast spot in all of the land, Plow (get there before they open to get a good spot in line. They fill up FAST!) Seriously, if you haven’t been you are really missing out. Get the buttermilk biscuit and honey butter (my mouth is literally watering just typing this).

After we filled our stomachs to the brim we walked it off by wandering our favorite neighborhoods. We first stopped by Big Daddy’s Antiques, one of our favorite spots to browse really cool antique pieces. They have a store in LA too!

A few of our favorite spots in SF:

Plow (always our first stop)

Sutro Baths

Legion of Honor Museum

Bi-Rite

Hops & Hominy – GET the gin and jam. Don’t ask, just do it.

NOPA – be sure to make a reservation for brunch!

Smitten Ice Cream, of course. And that entire area.

Jane – the cutest coffee shop

also, this made me laugh but it’s pretty true.

and really so much more. Every neighborhood in the city has so much charm!

I had a few shoots while we were in the city which led us to some really great spots that we hadn’t explored before. First up was the gorgeous Cavallo Point which has the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The next day we headed to The Presidio, a magical, magical tree lined spot in the middle of the city. It may be my new favorite spot there. And Adam is the best stand in light tester model.

Later that evening we drove to THE most incredible place ever, Mount Tamalpais to photograph some of our dear friends. The views are INSANE and the fog that rolls in and the light and the hills and all of the things. Basically, we couldn’t stop snapping away here.

A big thanks to our talented friend, Gladys for grabbing the camera after their shoot and snapping a few shots of the two of us.

Love in the desert

joshua-tree-session-love-ala-photography020

Keeping up with our desert theme for the week I’m sharing a little session our dear friend Ala did for us while we were in Joshua Tree. After Amber and Louie had to leave to head back home (in case you missed their sweet session on my photography blog, you can view that here) Ala came out and I got to take some spur of the moment maternity photos for her (that you can see here). In return she woke up at the butt crack of dawn with us and we all ventured out to the National Park for a sunrise session while it was still somewhat cool out (a cool 89 degrees at 6am).

She snapped these after I took a few of her the night before. This is my truest form really, hardly any makeup, my hair up in a topknot.

brooklyn and new york city

I am SO excited to finally share our trip with you all. I don’t know what took me so long, really but it’s fun reliving parts of it now! I’ll do my best to let you know where we stayed, what we did and where we visited but if you have any questions on anything particular in this post (like our amazing apartment, maybe?) feel free to email me! During our trip, I shot digital and Adam shot film so there’s a mix of both jumbled in here.

We are so thankful for friends that snap our photos before we leave for the airport. You know, just in case it goes down. aaaand I’m morbid, forgive me.

Brooklyn and NYC - Megan Welker Photography 001 Brooklyn and NYC - Megan Welker Photography 003 Brooklyn and NYC - Megan Welker Photography 002We arrived in the adorable neighborhood of Greenpoint and found our to-die for incredible antique store turned apartment. This place was meant for us! Seriously! I don’t know why we didn’t take more photos of the interior. It was perfection with a little kitchenette and a tub right out in the open with a handheld shower head. Go big or go home right? It made showering interesting, to say the least.

We grabbed coffee from there just about every morning….Well, the mornings we didn’t go to dunkin’ donuts anyways.

I get it. It’s adorable and has amazing little restaurants and shops adorning each and every perfect little street. I would totally get tricked into living there too. First up, we stopped at Black Brick and had, you guessed it, MORE coffee! Well, actually I had a chai and it was delish. We had the entire back patio to ourselves so we took advantage.

One of my favorite memories from the trip. Also, Wythe Hotel is bitchin. We definitely want to stay there next time! After Wythe, we went across the street to The Brooklyn Brewery for some beer tasting before walking just about 3 miles (we walked way too much. in our minds cabs were dumb. why pay when you can walk? more on that later.) to dinner at THE AMAZING Marlow and Sons. A MUST! Such great food and an even more wonderful atmosphere. This place came highly recommended to us and I’m really glad we made it there. After walking all the way back to our apartment we got a slice of pizza at the corner pizza joint because, why not.

Why we chose Saturday to do this is beyond me. We really weren’t thinking. There, of course, was a marathon happening on the bridge and there were about 1 million people but we ran into Adam’s family from Texas in the middle of the bridge which was so much fun! After the walk across the bridge, we had lunch then walked around Soho and had coffee at La Colombe Torrefaction. We’re still swooning over those coffee cups and have been searching for some like them ever since. We walked the cute streets of West Village and stopped by Carrie’s stoop, of course. After we walked through all of the parks and (I swear) ALL around New York, we went to see Romeo and Juliet with THE Orlando Bloom. We were feet away from him, it was so surreal. It was such a great show though! There’s something about live theater that I will always love. It was pretty late when we got out of the show but I still needed to have a frozen hot chocolate from Serendipity so there we went. While we were there our phones were dying so we had to write down the directions so we knew how to get back to Brooklyn. It was an adventure.

We started the day doing one of our favorite things, flea market-ing! We walked down to The Williamsburg Flea Market and had so much fun browsing around, wishing we had enough room in our luggage to take many, many things back with us! The one thing I desperately wanted to do in New York was go to Central Park so Sunday, we did. We walked all around Central Park until I started crying in the middle of the park because I tore/sprained/did something bad to my Achilles. It was then that I knew Adam was a keeper. Kidding, I knew that months and months ago but sitting in the middle of the park with tears falling down my cheeks as he sat next to me reassuring me that it was all okay and insisting we leave the park to find the nearest drug store so I could take some pain pills for my ankle instead. We had wine and cheese at a French Restaurant then went to S’mac because mac n’ cheese makes everything better. That night we went back to our apartment early so I could ice my ankle and recover a bit. It was then that we though, maybe taking cabs wouldn’t have been such a bad idea.

We didn’t want to travel too far, plus I could hardly walk so we found Brooklyn’s best croughnut (according to the internet) and had a nice sugary treat before making our way to a really cool African restaurant for brunch!

Surprise Date Day / Glamping

Honestly, Adam rocks. He is the master at planning surprise date days, and all other date days for that matter, but this one takes the cake.

One day he planned a date day(s) and told me to pack something casual, active and warm. Now, I don’t care what genre you tell me, I just want to wear a dress. Lucky for me, when he came to pick me up he told me to put on pants. So, before we left he asked if I could pick up a few things at the store; garlic, a tomato, onion and sirloin steak….now, one would think this was a dead camping giveaway, but to me (the girl who does not camp) I thought maybe we were airbnb-n it! It wasn’t until we clearly passed Santa Barbara that I knew something fishy was up. We turned into El Capitan Canyon, parked, and as we were walking to the lodge to check in (to what? I had no clue) Adam pointed to a tent and said, “We’re staying in that”. I. Was. Ecstatic. “We’re GLAMPING?!” I very excitedly said. This guy. He knows me too well.

We cooked up steak and veggies, ate cheese and drank wine around the campfire and had an encounter with a little skunk friend. All in all it was perfection.

Here are some details about the campsite.

We stayed HERE

For the tent it was $150 a night. If you’re staying for the weekend there’s a minimum two nights stay. They also have cabins and yurts.

You can buy BBQ and s’mores kits (or just bring your own stuff)

There are a couple little hiking trails (I say little because even the most amateur hiker, like me, can do it.

Here are a mixture of film and iPhone shots from our trip. We stopped in Santa Barbara on our way home and walked around the beautiful little town.            El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 001 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 002 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 003 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 004 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 005 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 006 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 007 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 008 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 009 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 010 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 011 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 012 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 013 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 014 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 015 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 016 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 017 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 018 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 019 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 020 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 021 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 022 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 023 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 024 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 025 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 026 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 027 El Capitan Canyon Glamping - Megan Welker Photography 028

Tulum Travel Guide

Tulum-Mexico-Megan-Welker-Photography-152

WHERE TO STAY
We really loved our little hut at Papaya Playa Project
Although..the beaches are better (calmer, less seaweed) south so if you plan on being in the ocean a lot I would recommend..
Hip Hotel
Be Tulum
Of course Coqui Coqui Tulum is beautiful, but after seeing the Coba Coqui we were a little underwhelmed by the Tulum one. Still, it’s gorgeous and if you can stay there, get it!

Tulum-Mexico-Megan-Welker-Photography-086 Tulum-Mexico-Megan-Welker-Photography-094

WHERE TO EAT
Encanto Cantina (in town) – THE best. It’s brand new to Tulum and it was one of the best meals we had on our trip.
Hartwood – Trendy, hip, you have to get there an hour early to wait in line to be able to get a seat buuuut as much as I hate to say this (because they pissed me off and told me I couldn’t take photos) it was worth it. Amazing food.
Casa Banana – Delicious filet mignon and skirt steak…and mojitos ; )
El Tabano – We had a really wonderful meal here, stuffed jalapenos, more ceviche, etc etc…really, we ate a lot here!
Taqueria Honorio – Little taqueria in town off the beaten path. If you can find it you MUST GO. Best cochinita tacos we’ve ever had and our bill was like $4. It’s the one with the red canopy!
Poseda Margherita – Great Italian food. Pricey, but good.
Coco Tulum – Good Pizza!

Tulum-Mexico-Megan-Welker-Photography-025 Tulum-Mexico-Megan-Welker-Photography-125

WHAT TO DO
Tulum Ruins – We felt it was kind of necessary to go to them since they’re so quintessential Tulum. They were beautiful but it was HOT. People say bring your bathing suit and towel because you can go to the beach right below the ruins but we chose to skip that since it was packed and our beach was heaven in itself already.
Cenotes – The one thing I was bummed we didn’t end up doing was go to a Cenote. There are a ton in Tulum and on the outskirts of the town. They are underwater sinkholes that you can swim and snorkel in. We just never got around to getting snorkeling gear and getting up from our cabana to go check them out. Next time!
Shop! There are two different areas you can shop in. There’s in town, which is a bit more touristy, most stores have the same thing as the one next to it but they’re cheaper than the shops on the main street in Tulum across from the beach, on the jungle side. The shops there are higher priced since they’re all right across from the hotels and they know they can attract tourists that way and you don’t have to leave to drive into town. We actually liked the shops in town better, that’s where all of the beautiful hammocks are that I wanted to bring home. We bought a beautiful piece of pottery in town to take home from a little art gallery in town.
Xel-Ha – We thought this was a little too touristy for our taste to do. It’s basically a water amusement park and there are a ton of tours that take you there. If you’re into that kinda thing, this is your jam!
Anywhere you stay will have tours listed that you can sign up for which is nice. They have day excursions where you can do the ruins, cenotes and go into town all in the same day. If you want to knock it all out at once, then I suggest doing this!

Tulum-Mexico-Megan-Welker-Photography-019 Tulum-Mexico-Megan-Welker-Photography-102 Tulum-Mexico-Megan-Welker-Photography-122

WHAT TO WEAR
So, I brought all of my clothes just about and turns out you hardly need any at all. Most days I wore my bathing suit under a dress or a bathing suit cover up and that was it. It was pretty hot so I didn’t really want to wear the maxi dresses I brought, although they were great to have to wear to dinner at night to keep the mosquitos away from my ankles. But really all you need are a few bathing suits, some breezy dresses, bathing suit cover ups, a pair of shorts, a sun hat, sunglasses and flip flops.

Tulum-Mexico-Megan-Welker-Photography-089

WHAT TO BRING
A flashlight. There aren’t any street lights here so once the sun goes down it gets dark. We used the flashlight from our phone a lot too!
Sunscreen! Lots of it!!
Mosquito repellent! Lots of it ; ) and itch cream for when you do get bit, because you will.
It was really nice having Pesos while we were there. While most places will take US dollars all of the prices are in pesos and so we just found it was way easier. Plus, if you pay in dollars you kind of get ripped off when you get your change back in pesos.

Enjoy your trip and soak up every second. I miss it already!!
